Jesus, Root of Jesse

Scripture         Read Isaiah 11:1-10
Focus Verse    Isaiah 11:10
On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.

Commentary: Isaiah speaks hope in a time of terror, and he preaches justice in a time of oppression. Jesse was David’s father and the image of a branch from the roots of Jesse links future with past. Judah’s history with God was one of election and favor.  Isaiah is painting the picture of a positive reign, hearkening back to the days when King David was on the throne of Judah. This prophesy of messianic expectations has long been used to paint a picture for the glorious reign of Christ.

Reflection: How do you speak hope into the world and into the lives of your neighbors?

Prayer Breathing in … Jesus, Root of Jesse
Prayer Breathing out … Dwell in my Heart

If music is a spiritual pathway for you, our advent musical journey this year takes us to the "O Antiphons" which refer to the seven antiphons that are recited (or chanted) preceding the Magnificat during Vespers of the Liturgy of the Hours at the end of Advent. I invite you to listen to the Monks of St. John's Abbey as they chant O Root of Jesse, an Antiphon that reminds us that God is always present in our darkest hours, helping us get through life's tribulations.
