The Bread

Scripture: Luke 22:14-20
Focus Verse: Luke 22:19b
This is my body, which is given for you.

Commentary: The Israelites were to eat only unleavened bread every year during Passover.  The term unleavened bread is derived from the word matzah, which means "bread or cake without leaven."  Leaven is symbolic of sin that can spread person to person, community to community, running rampant when unchecked.  With the words he speaks, Jesus symbolizes the offering of his own body as a sacrifice for the sin of humanity.

Reflection:  How have you experienced the spread of sin, like leaven, in yourself or others or in communities?   How did you experience the grace of God?

ACTS Prayer
Adoration: Holy Deliverer of Israel, you are the Almighty!
Confession: I confess I am a sinner and need your mercy.
Thanksgiving: Thank you for never giving up on me.
Supplication: I pray that sin is revealed to those who are ruining lives with the spread of unchecked evil. May their hearts be broken with regret and repentance bring new life.

ACTS of Faith:  Fast from bread today.
