Fasting

Scripture: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21
Focus Verse: Matthew 6:17
When you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face …

Commentary:  Fasting from food, as a spiritual practice, has a long history.  Jesus says “when” you fast, not if.  He expects fasting to be a part of our authentic relationship with God and not something we do to show how “spiritual” we are. We learn in our self-denial to rely on God in other times, when we are deprived or devastated by life.  Fasting from distracting activities or attitudes can enhance our spiritual practice of fasting and draw us closer to God.

Reflection:  Have you ever fasted as a spiritual practice?  If so, what did you learn about yourself? If not, why not?

ACTS Prayer
Adoration:  God of Simplicity, I lift up your holy Name!
Confession:  I confess that sometimes I act like nothing is ever enough.  Help me to know that you are enough.
Thanksgiving:  Thank you for being all that I want and need.
Supplication: I pray for those who live below the poverty line and do not have the resources to care for their family.

ACTS of Faith:  Fast from eating snacks between meals and donate the funds to an organization that alleviates hunger, OR fast from an activity to read scripture or volunteer.
