Scripture Matthew 1:1-17, 2 Samuel 7:16-17
Focus Verse Matthew 1:1
An account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
The title Messiah means “deliverer.” As beautiful a moment as the Nativity scene itself is, the journey to deliverance began long ago in Jewish history. In many ways, the journey to deliverance, the journey to salvation, the journey to wholeness is played out in each person’s life every day.
God made a promise to King David, a notorious sinner but also a “man after God’s own heart” that his house and his kingdom, indeed his throne would be forever. When we hear a call from God, we may think the journey will be easy. It usually isn’t. Like King David, we make mistakes but we can turn toward God, ask for forgiveness and move on, over and over, again and again.
Reflection: Think about your journey to salvation. What low points have you experienced, times when you couldn’t see how God was working? What high points have you experienced, times when you felt right in step with God’s unfolding plan for your life and the life of the world? What mistakes have you made? How have you found forgiveness?
"Come though Long Expected Jesus," published in 1744 by Charles Wesley is part of the fabric of our Advent preparations for the arrival of the Messiah. If music is a spiritual pathway for you, listen to Fernando Ortega sing this classic.
Prayer: Breathing “The Jesus Prayer”
Breathing in … Lord Jesus Christ
Breathing out … Have mercy
*pray by breathing this prayer repetitively until the prayer prays you. You’ll know the prayer is praying you when the words come to you at random times in random places. You will simply feel the words on your lips, in sync with your breathing. And you have begun the process of praying unceasingly through the power of the Holy Spirit!
