Psalm 125: Trust in the Lord

Our outward posture often reflects our inward state.  The body, mind, and soul are inseparable.    As we walk gently upon a well-worn path or meander alongside a river in our imagination, we are engaging in a body prayer.  As we walk, we grow into a posture of trust.

Scripture:      Psalm 125

Focus:           Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. ~Psalm 125:1

Commentary:  Can you imagine family groups leaving their homes and villages traveling together, singing these psalms as they walk to Jerusalem.  Historical scholars believe the Psalms of Ascent were assembled during the post-exilic time.

The Jewish people were in the minority, surrounded by those who did not worship the God of Israel.  It must have been a very hard life, and this psalm expresses the lament of the people.  After their time in Jerusalem, they were able to return home with deeper trust, not because their outward circumstances had changed but because their time with God had changed them from within.

Reflection:  What restores your faith in times of wilderness, dry and desolate?  How is God offering you grace right now and changing you from within?

Invitation to Embodied Prayer:  Ask someone to take a talk and walk with you, someone in your family or a close friend. Engage in a conversation about God as you walk or as you share a phone call.  You might simply say, “Here is where I’ve seen God recently,” and then ask, “Where have you experienced God?”

If music is a spiritual pathway for you, listen to Broken Vessels (Amazing Grace) offered live in Israel by Hillsong and catch the energy of all the people, with hearts turned toward God, joining their voices together just as the pilgrims on the their journey to Jerusalem.

Breath Prayer for the Day:
Breathing in … God of Peace
Breathing out … I trust in you
