Jesus, Way, Truth & Life

Scripture         Read John 14:1-14
Focus Verse    John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.

Commentary: When we drop in on Jesus and the disciples, we can recognize trouble in the air. Jesus, their beloved teacher and friend, has told them he is leaving and what he says doesn’t make sense.  One of their own has turned against them and their impulsive friend who is their leader is said to be wavering in his loyalty. The ground is shifting beneath their feet.  Perhaps Jesus senses they have lost their way as he reassures them that he is not abandoning them. Jesus himself is all they need; there is no need to panic, no need to search desperately for a secret map. Jesus does not just "show" us the way, he IS the Way.

Reflection: What does it mean when you say that Jesus is the Way?  How does following Jesus lead you into truth and life?

Prayer Breathing in …  Jesus, Truth-Bringer
Prayer Breathing out … Show me the Way

If music is a spiritual pathway for you, today's selection is a very simply refrain called "Journey to Bethlehem," that I found on YouTube but there is little information about it.  I sense that it is part of a children's Christmas play ... but there is something about listening to these sweet young voices, over and over, that invites me to think about the journey that holy family took, a journey that brought Jesus, the Way into the world.  It feels unfinished and I like that for no matter where we are in our own story ... it is unfinished and we simply have to journey with Jesus who IS the Way to get where we are going.
