Holy Week Journey: The Betrayal

Matthew 26:14-16, 49 and 27:5
Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, ‘What will you give me if I betray him to you?’ They paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he began to look for an opportunity to betray him. At once he came up to Jesus and said, ‘Greetings, Rabbi!’ and kissed him. Throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed; and he went and hanged himself.

Have you a dime or a quarter, a “piece of silver?”   Take a moment to find one and hold it in your hand.  Remember how many pieces of silver Judas got for his betrayal?  As you hold a piece of silver in your hand, think about a time when greedy or selfish emotions made you do something you normally wouldn’t do.  How did that work for you?

Perhaps you have more than a few coins ... perhaps you have 30 coins.  Take a handful of coins and drop them into a metal dish or drop them on a hard floor.  Listen carefully as they fall … one by one or by the handful.  How much would it take for you to betray your faith?  Has there ever been a time in your life when you were driven to despair as Judas was?   Remember how you made it past your despair.

As you continue your Holy Week Journey, remember there is no betrayal that God will not forgive.
