waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water ... Isaiah 35:6
Isaiah is my favorite prophet because I find him to be a man with a poetic soul. I have fallen in love with his vivid imagery which inspires me creatively. He never fails to encourage me to draw and express myself as I enter into the text.
In Isaiah we find some of the most beautiful visions of God in the bible, much of them using nature as a metaphor to connect with as our imaginations transport us to another time and place.
During the season of Advent we are looking to the past for a word about our future HOPE as we live in the present moment. So what can we learn about God from Isaiah? The exiles were in Babylon waiting for the ruler to let them go. One day they were told they could go home to Zion. What a day for rejoicing that must have been. God was calling them home!
As I sat and reflecting on the words of this passage that attracted me (while engaging in Lectio Divina) I found myself thinking about the waters that were pouring forth into the wilderness of the life. Have you ever experienced the "wilderness?" What was that like for you?
I thought about the wind and the waters of Hurricane Katrina that moved me from New Orleans to Houston. Talk about exile! I certainly felt that way at the time. Why me God? It seems like it has taken forever for me to begin to feel the living water bubbling up from within. I don't know that I deserve it but GRACE makes up our shortfall. As I listened to the music, Marching to Zion ... I could see Zion, majestic and beatuful. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! I am set free! So ... where do you find your freedom?
